We ended 2014 with a real bang last night, as the 6th Spence Blitz featured two Californians, one Nebraskan on assignment in Korea, and a player new to the USCF! The first master to play a rated game at the Spence, Juan Diego Perea Del Pinot, won the event (and all the cash!) with 8/10. Tony Dutiel upheld the honor of his fellow Spenceans by finishing in clear second with 7/10.

This was probably the strongest (by elo) tournament we’ve held. Thanks to everybody for coming out, and a special thanks to Robert Shlyakhtenko for recognizing your humble TD as a columnist for Chess Life!

John Hartmann and Steve Cusumano tied for first with 3.5/5. John Ward took the U1600 prize and Rich Gruber won the U1300 prize.

Steve Cusumano is now 8/8 in his last eight rated games. Wow.

Congrats to Steve on winning the 4th Spence G/40 with a perfect 4/4. John Hartmann and C. Scott Look finished =2nd/3rd at 3.0/4. Were there an upset prize, Steve Behrens would have won it – he went 2.0/4 and his rating jumped 122 points!
