2013 Club Ch – Rd 5!

The clock may have struck midnight on Abhinav Suresh’s Cinderella turn with his loss to John Stepp in Round 5.  Stepp downed the tournament leader in a sharp tactical game, opening the door for John Linscott to charge to the top of the leader board with his win over Steven Cusumano.

Tony Dutiel and David Sparks join Suresh and Stepp in a large tie for second place at 3.5/5.  Dutiel defeated John Hartmann in a battle of the annotators after an opening surprise and a complicated middlegame.  Sparks continued his impressive run with a nice win over Dan Wolk.

Towards the bottom of the table, Eylon Caplan notched his first victory of the tournament with a win against Brendan Forsling.  Jon Reigenborn took advantage of some opening infelicities and defeated John McElderry, and Thomas Freed won against Rich Gruber with a crafty middlegame trap.

Getting Ready for Gulko!

Maybe you’ve heard that Boris Gulko is coming to Omaha.  Well, we’re excited as can be to welcome him to the Spence Chess Club, and we’re hoping to ramp up that excitement with a special event!

On Tuesday November 5th NE State Champion Ben Fabrikant will be available from 7-10pm to analyze any game you put in front of him.  How often can you have the State Champ analyze your game and help you improve?  There will also be open, non-rated play in the Beth Israel Social Hall this evening, as the rated games will be moving to a different room in the Synagogue.

Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity.  Come on down, have a look at the final round of the Spence Club Championship, and then ask Ben to analyze your games!
