Getting Ready for Gulko!

Maybe you’ve heard that Boris Gulko is coming to Omaha.  Well, we’re excited as can be to welcome him to the Spence Chess Club, and we’re hoping to ramp up that excitement with a special event!

On Tuesday November 5th NE State Champion Ben Fabrikant will be available from 7-10pm to analyze any game you put in front of him.  How often can you have the State Champ analyze your game and help you improve?  There will also be open, non-rated play in the Beth Israel Social Hall this evening, as the rated games will be moving to a different room in the Synagogue.

Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity.  Come on down, have a look at the final round of the Spence Club Championship, and then ask Ben to analyze your games!

2013 Club Ch – Rd 4!

Abhinav Suresh continued his assault on the top spot with a come-from-behind victory against John Hartmann.  Both players were in time pressure when Hartmann missed Suresh’s back rank threats and was duly punished.  Suresh’s win left him in the driver’s seat with two rounds to play, and with his performance thus far, he will be a threat to be reckoned with as the tournament winds down.

In other games, John Linscott defeated John Stepp in a trendy line of the Ruy Lopez.  David Sparks correctly sac’d an exchange to earn a draw against Tony Dutiel.  Steven Cusumano beat Thomas Freed in a back-and-forth game, and Jon Reigenborn downed Brendan Forsling.

2013 Club Ch – Rd 2!

The story of Round 2 was the draw between Abhinav Suresh and John Linscott on Board 1.  Linscott struggled to break through Suresh’s defenses for many moves; when he was able to create a potential breach, he was too short of time to find the winning move (46…Qd1+) and so acceded to Suresh’s draw offer in mutual time trouble.  Linscott was able to take his revenge against Suresh, however, in this weekend’s Great Plains Open.

In other news, Tony Dutiel has been playing some very good chess recently, and his Round 2 win against Steven Cusumano, coupled with his tie for first at the Great Plains Open, makes him a force to be reckoned with in this tournament.  Dutiel played his pet 8.Qf3 variation in the Two Knights and won in 31 moves.  David Sparks showed that he knew how to use pins in his win versus Eylon Caplan, fracturing White’s kingside defences and launching a quick mating attack.  Dan Wolk, despite his long-dormant bishop, managed to squeeze out a win against Jon Reigenborn.

There are rumors that two more combatants might join us tonight.  We’ll see!

2013 Club Ch – Rd 1!

The first round of the Spence Club Championship largely went as ratings would have predicted, with one important exception.  Brandon Forsling scored the only upset of the round, winning a real barnburner of a game against Dan Wolk.  Forsling, a recent Creighton grad, was unable to devote much time to chess while in college; now that he’s out of school, opponents should be wary.  In other contests, David Sparks put up a valiant struggle against John Stepp, but the combined pressure of the clock and Stepp’s initiative proved too much to bear.  John McElderry and Abhinav Suresh came to a fascinating endgame position that, while hard to solve over the board, would reward patient study.

Tony Dutiel is scheduled to join the competition in round two.  Might some others?
