The first round of the Spence Club Championship largely went as ratings would have predicted, with one important exception. Brandon Forsling scored the only upset of the round, winning a real barnburner of a game against Dan Wolk. Forsling, a recent Creighton grad, was unable to devote much time to chess while in college; now that he’s out of school, opponents should be wary. In other contests, David Sparks put up a valiant struggle against John Stepp, but the combined pressure of the clock and Stepp’s initiative proved too much to bear. John McElderry and Abhinav Suresh came to a fascinating endgame position that, while hard to solve over the board, would reward patient study.
Tony Dutiel is scheduled to join the competition in round two. Might some others?
